Evan Goldberg says that Superbad and Pineapple Express won’t be getting sequels.
Speaking to Complex, Goldberg and Seth Rogen were asked if there are any movies they previously made that they plan to revisit in any form.
What did Evan Goldberg say about Pineapple Express 2 and Superbad 2?
“We’re not opposed to revisiting some things, like Sausage Party. Superbad and Pineapple Express, we will not be revisiting. We will keep those safe and sound. There are a few things that are best left untouched.”
Released in 2007, Superbad was written by Rogen (who also plays a role in the film) and Goldberg. Greg Mottola directed the film, while Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Bill Hader also starred. It follows two teenagers who attempt to lose their virginity as they’re about to graduate from high school.
Pineapple Express was released in 2008. Once again written by Rogen and Goldberg, the film was directed by David Gordon Green. It stars Rogen as Dale Denton, a process server who goes on the run with his marijuana dealer (played by James Franco) as witnesses a murder committed by hitmen and a corrupt police officer.
While Pineapple Express and Superbad won’t be getting sequels, a sequel series to 2016’s Sausage Party is premiering on Amazon Prime Video on July 11, 2024. The voice cast of Sausage Party: Foodtopia includes Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Cera, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, Sam Richardson, Will Forte, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester.
Goldberg and Rogen are additionally known for working on 2011’s The Green Hornet, 2011’s 50/50, 2012’s The Watch, 2013’s This Is the End, 2014’s The Interview, 2015’s The Night Before, 2016’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and, most recently, 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, among other titles.
Superbad is currently streaming on Prime Video, while Pineapple Express is available to watch on Netflix.
