Searchlight Pictures has enlisted the names of Kate McKinnon (Barbie) and Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) to join lead stars Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch for The Roses. The film is an upcoming adaptation of the 1989 classic, The War of the Roses.
Deadline reported that both McKinnon and Samberg are tapped to join The Roses cast in still-undisclosed roles. The Roses is said to be based on Warren Adler’s The War of the Roses novel, which received a film adaptation of the same name back in 1989, starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito, and more.
According to the outlet, filming for The Roses will start later this month. No release date has been set yet for the upcoming remake.
What is The Roses about?
Directed by Jay Roach (Bombshell) and written by Tony McNamara (Poor Things), the forthcoming film will center on a perfect and enviable couple, Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), whose life — despite seemingly having it all — is nothing as it seems.
“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo and Ivy: successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down,” the synopsis reads.
Who else will star in The Roses?
In addition to McKinnon and Samberg, the outlet also reported the additional stars joining the already stacked cast of The Roses, including Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, and Belinda Bromilow.
Cumberbatch also served as the film’s producer under his SunnyMarch banner, alongside Colman under the South of the River banner. Additional producers include Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver, Roach, and Michelle Graham. Executive producers are Adler Entertainment Trust’s Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler.
Other details about The Roses remain under wraps.
