Anatomy of a Fall’s Sandra Hüller has been tapped to star alongside Ryan Gosling in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary.
Per Deadline, Hüller has officially been cast in Project Hail Mary, a new movie that is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 sci-fi novel of the same name. The film is currently expected to hit theaters in 2026.
Hüller was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Sandra Voyter in 2023’s Anatomy of a Fall, which was directed and co-written by Justine Triet. The same year, she also starred in Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
What is Lord and Miller’s Project Hail Mary about?
“Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there,” Deadline’s description of the film reads. “He must figure out how to complete his interstellar mission to save Earth from an astronomical catastrophe completely alone, until he meets a mysterious alien who has traveled light years to save his own species from the same fate.”
Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Bad Times at the El Royale) wrote the script for Project Hail Mary, while Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, and Weir all serve as producers. Executive producers include Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Ken Kao, and Patty Whitcher.
Lord and Miller are known for directing 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 2012’s 21 Jump Street, 2014’s The Lego Movie, and 2014’s 22 Jump Street. They’re also both heavily involved with Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise, among other titles.
Project Hail Mary is currently scheduled to release in United States theaters on March 20, 2026, from Amazon MGM Studios.
