John Waters Gives Liarmouth Update, Aubrey Plaza Movie Struggling to Find Funding

Hairspray director John Waters has shared another update regarding the current status of his Liarmouth movie, which is expected to be led by Parks and Recreation star Aubrey Plaza. The project is based on Waters’ debut novel, which was first published in 2022.

During a recent interview with IndieWire, Waters admitted that his Liarmouth movie continues to have difficulty in finding financiers to support the project, which was first unveiled back in February. The story centers around a con artist and compulsive liar named Marsha Sprinkle, who’s hated by everybody including her family. Her situation changes with the arrival of one insane man.

“I’ll say it one more time, and there is no scoop here, there’s nothing new I’m telling you, but… [Village Roadshow] optioned the book,” he shared. “I wrote the script, they liked it, Aubrey [Plaza] likes the script, wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every person said, ‘No, we don’t have a penny of the budget.’ That is where it is today. Hopefully that will change.”

What’s Next for Aubrey Plaza?

Besides Liarmouth, Plaza is also currently attached to star in two upcoming comedy movies, Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds and Honey Don’t with Margaret Qualley. She also recently starred in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic sci-fi drama Megalopolis, which has just made its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

In addition, Plaza is also expected to serve as an executive producer on Lionsgate Television’s upcoming series adaptation of Emily the Criminal, based on Plaza’s 2022 crime thriller movie. She will next be seen in the highly-anticipated Disney+ series Agatha All Along, where she’ll be playing the role of Rio Vidal.
