John Krasinski’s family comedy IF claimed the top spot at the box office this weekend, debuting with an estimated $34M, per Deadline.
Initially, reports had the Ryan Reynolds vehicle opening much lower. However, word of mouth propelled the pic to a solid $13.6M Saturday (up 32% versus Friday), resulting in a better-than-expected first weekend, though not nearly as high as initially forecasted. Luckily, an A CinemaScore bodes well for IF’s future, even in a crowded marketplace.
IF scored $24M internationally, bringing its global haul to $59M.
Last week’s champ, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, held strong, dipping just 56% in its sophomore frame for a 3-day $25.7M total. The fourth modern Ape film has totaled $101M domestically and $237M worldwide.
Elsewhere, Lionsgate’s Strangers – Chapter 1 slashed its way to an $11.5M opening, while Focus Features’ Back to Black landed in fifth place with $2.8M.
The box office should get a nice boost this weekend with the release of George Miller’s anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Sony Pictures’ The Garfield Movie.
