Rumors of a potential I Am Legend 2 have been circulating for years now, but star Will Smith recently said that a movie could be coming.
Speaking to ET at a fan screening for his upcoming Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Smith was asked about the rumors that he and Michael B. Jordan were planning a sequel to the 2007 film. Smith revealed that the pair had met and things were “looking good,” and expressed optimism at the possibility of the movie happening.
“We had a couple weeks together about a month ago. I think it’s looking good,” said Smith. “[We have some] really solid ideas . . . I think we’re going to make it on screen together. That dude is the truth, so I would love to do that.”
What do we know about I Am Legend 2?
A sequel to I Am Legend was announced to be in the works in 2022, but there hasn’t been much in the way of updates since then. Last year, writer Akiva Goldsman opened up about what the film could potentially include, revealing that it may be set decades into the future.
“This will start a few decades later than the first,” Goldsman said. “I’m obsessed with The Last of Us, where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the empire state building, but the possibilities are endless.”
The original I Am Legend was based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. It was a hit when it premiered in 2007 and opened to the largest-ever box office for a non-Christmas movie at the time and was the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2007.
