What is David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds about?
“Karsh, 50, is a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds,” the synopsis reads. “One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are desecrated. Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators.”
Diane Kruger (National Treasure, Inglourious Basterds) is playing three different roles in The Shrouds. She told Deadline Hollywood in December 2023, “It’s probably David’s most personal film because it deals with the loss of his wife, who passed away from cancer. With David’s very particular twist on how he narrates, you know, story and pain — it’s a movie that deals with loss and grief and being in a couple for so long, being in a relationship for so long, and what true love is. I play the wife, his sister, and an avatar he created in her memory.”
The film also stars Vincent Cassel (Ocean’s Twelve), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), and Sandrine Holt (House of Cards).
Cronenberg is largely known for making sci-fi movies with an emphasis on body horror, including 1975’s Shivers, 1977’s Rabid, 1981’s Scanners, 1983’s Videodrome, and 1986’s The Fly, among others. His most recent film was 2022’s Crimes of the Future, which starred Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart.
The Shrouds does not yet have an official United States release date set at this time.
