Godzilla x Kong Sequel: MonsterVerse Movie Nabs Shang-Chi Writer

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery have found the writer for the next entry in the Godzilla/King Kong monster movie universe.

A recent report from THR notes that Dave Callahan (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to write the next film in the “MonsterVerse.” While nothing is known about the film as of yet, it will follow the recently released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which was a big hit at the box office and showed that the monstrous duo is still a huge draw.

With Callahan now on board, it’s unclear exactly what is next for the still-in-development project. Director Adam Wingard has not yet decided whether to return to the franchise despite Legendary wanting him back, according to THR. Wingard is still planning on making his next movie, A24’s Onslaught, before deciding on what his next move will be.

Following its release earlier this year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire grossed just under $555 million at the global box office, making it the second-highest earning film in the MonsterVerse, just behind 2017’s Kong: Skull Island ($568 million).

What is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire about?

“The epic battle continues!  Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence — and our own. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is directed and executive produced by Adam Wingard from a screenplay written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater. The latest installment stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen.
