Bear Country: Russell Crowe to Re-Team With Unhinged Director for New Action Movie

Russell Crowe is re-teaming with Derrick Borte, who directed 2020’s Unhinged, for a new action thriller movie called Bear Country.

Per Deadline, A Higher Standard is handling the sales of Bear Country, which will star Crowe, at the Cannes Film Market.

What is Bear Country about?

“Crowe will play aging but formidable club owner, Manco Kapak who has been robbed by a masked gunman,” Deadline’s description of the movie reads. “Now, his aspirations of selling his club and riding off into the sunset alongside his girlfriend appear more distant than ever. Cartel bosses are breathing down his neck and a young upstart has been posing as the new guy in town eager to purchase the club.

Borte co-wrote the screenplay for Bear Country, which is based on a 2010 Thomas Perry novel called Strip, with Daniel Forte. Production on the film is expected to begin in October.

Mark Fasano Jeffrey Greenstein, Mark Bower, Bruno Mustic, David Lipper, and Robert A. Daly Jr. serve as producers of the film.

Crowe and Borte previously worked together on 2020’s Unhinged, which saw the Gladiator actor play a man named Tom Cooper who terrorizes a young woman following a road rage incident. Borte also directed 2009’s The Joneses, 2016’s London Town, and 2019’s American Dreamer, among other titles.

“After the great experience we shared on Unhinged, I’d been looking for another project with Russell – one that would allow him to show more of what so many people (including myself) loved so much about Jackson Healy in The Nice Guys – and we both immediately knew that Bear Country was the one,” Borte said of Bear Country.

Fasano added, “Bear Country will keep viewers on the edge of their seats with plenty of action and surprises in store. Russell brings a captivating energy to the screen and has helped cultivate some of the best thrillers in recent memory.”
