A new Avatar 3 teaser image has made its way online, revealing a giant new creature. James Cameron confirms that his upcoming untitled sequel will introduce multiple new species, including a horrifying new being, which he called “Medusa.”
Avatar 3’s ‘Medusa’ jellyfish creature revealed in teaser image
James Cameron recently teased that Medusa will make its onscreen debut in Avatar 3. The creature could also appear in Avatar 4, which is scheduled for 2029.
In Paris, he spoke with the Konbini YouTube channel at an exhibition titled “The Art of James Cameron.” Showcasing multiple art pieces he designed for his movies over the years, he also revealed the art for Medusa in the following video (at 7:41):
Pointing at the giant jellyfish creature, he said:
“This guy… some of these ideas will actually emerge in ‘Avatar 3’ and ‘Avatar 4,’ right? So a little bit of a not a spoiler, maybe a teaser, right?”
Notably, Medusa was present in the original 1995 draft of 2009’s Avatar titled “Project 880.” However, the creature did not make it to the final version of the film.
Giant jellyfish was cut from Avatar 1
Described as a huge flying jellyfish, Medusa in Avatar (2009) would have been seen snatching Jake Sully (originally Josh) from the floating mountains where his team was present on Pandora.
Eventually, Jake/Josh would have killed the creature and fallen into a tree made of snakeheads. Here, he would have interacted with the wildlife creatures that ended up in Avatar’s final cut.
Both Medusa and the snakehead tree were removed from the first Avatar. But now, Medusa is expected to be a crucial part of Avatar 3 and will probably move into the fourth installment, which will feature a time jump.
James Cameron’s Avatar 3 is set to be released on December 19, 2025.
