Dune 3 has turned into a highly anticipated sequel after the way Dune: Part Two ended. While the latter continues to break the bank at the worldwide box office, director Denis Villeneuve is diligently working on the next installment. He recently provided an update on the progress of Dune 3, which is currently in its pre-production stages.
Denis Villeneuve confirms he’s writing Dune 3
In a sit-down with The New York Times, Villeneuve answered all fan questions about Dune: Part Two. He also discussed Dune 3, confirming that he’s writing the Dune Messiah adaptation “right now.”
Upon being asked about Paul and Chani’s equation after Part Two’s ending that saw Chani leaving Paul’s side in anger, Villeneuve said:
“That anger is tremendous. I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it right now. But there’s a lot of firepower there, and I’m very excited about that decision.”
Villeneuve’s answer hints that it will be a while before Dune 3 hits the theaters. Furthermore, the director is also confirmed to take on Legendary’s live-action adaptation of the Annie Jacobsen novel, “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” before Dune 3.
Dune 3 to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah
Earlier, while speaking with Time magazine, Villeneuve confirmed that Dune 3 will be based on Frank Herbert’s second novel in the series, “Dune Messiah.” The director split the first novel into two halves to adapt his two Dune movies. But the third Dune movie will cover Dune Messiah in its entirety.
Dune: Part Two stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Javier Bardem, and Charlotte Rampling. It is currently available to rent on digital and will be available to purchase on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 14, 2024.
