Andrew Garfield and Miles Teller are reportedly being eyed for Martin Scorsese’s Jesus movie.
According to Variety, Scorsese’s new movie about Jesus — which is based on Shūsaku Endō’s A Life of Jesus, which was published in 1973 — is looking to cast either Garfield or Teller in a leading role.
It’s currently unclear if the two actors are being eyed for the same part. It’s also uncertain whether Garfield or Teller could play Jesus in the film or one of his disciples.
Garfield and Scorsese previously worked together on 2016’s Silence, which also starred Adam Driver. Garfield is also known for playing Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, while he’s also starred in 2010’s The Social Network, 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, 2018’s Under the Silver Lake, and 2021’s Tick, Tick… Boom!, among other roles.
Teller has yet to appear in a movie directed by Scorsese; however, he did play Vincenzo Pazienza in 2016’s Bleed for This, which was executive-produced by Scorsese. Teller is also known for starring in 2014’s Whiplash, 2015’s Fantastic Four, 2016’s War Dogs, and 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick.
What do we know about Martin Scorsese’s new Jesus movie?
Plot details for Scorsese’s Jesus movie remain largely under wraps at this time; although, the Killers of the Flower Moon director has previously said it wouldn’t be a “usual, straight narrative” version of Jesus’ life.
According to Variety, the movie is expected to begin filming later this year in Israel, Italy, and Egypt. “Filming in Israel could prove too great of a logistical challenge given that the country is at war with Hamas in Gaza,” Variety’s article reads.
Scorsese, who made The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, announced he was making a movie about Jesus in May 2023 after he and his wife, Helen Morris, met privately with Pope Francis at the Vatican. Scorsese has also said he plans to play a role in the film, though it’s unclear how large of a part it will be.
