Victoria Mahoney, who is directing Netflix’s The Old Guard 2, has been tapped to helm a new rom-com centered around NASCAR for Amazon MGM Studios.
Per Deadline, Mahoney is directing Clean Air, a new romantic comedy that will be produced by Will Smith. The script comes from Alison Rose Greenberg.
What is Clean Air about?
The movie, according to Deadline, “follows Lyla, an ambitious sports agent who loses her superstar client before the start of NASCAR’s season and decides to take a chance on a rebellious female dirt track racer, 17-year-old Piper Kyte. With her career on the line, Lyla’s challenge — getting Piper NASCAR-ready — is only won if she can also reform Piper’s reclusive father, Matthew Kyte, a former NASCAR champion who infamously walked away from the sport and hasn’t been seen in four years.”
Casting for Clean Air has not yet been announced. Along with Smith, the film will be produced by Jon Mone and Dan Marcus, while Heather Washington, Drew Taggart, Alex Pall, Adam Alpert, Tim Clark, and Matt Summers will serve as executive producers.
Along with the Charlize Theron-led The Old Guard 2 (which is currently in postproduction but does not yet have a release date), Mahoney wrote, produced, and directed 2011’s Yelling to the Sky, which starred Zoë Kravitz and Jason Clarke. She’s also directed a number of episodes for various television series, including Grey’s Anatomy, American Crime, Power, You, Lovecraft Country, and The Morning Show.
Additionally, Mahoney was the second unit director on 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. She’s currently helming the pilot of the Suits: L.A. spinoff for NBC.
Smith, meanwhile, will soon be seen reprising his role as Mike Lowrey alongside Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which opens in United States theaters this June.
Clean Air does not yet have a release date from Amazon MGM Studios.
