After winning the Heisman Trophy while playing for the USC Trojans, Simpson began playing for the Buffalo Bills in 1969. He played for the Bills for nine seasons before he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, eventually retiring from the National Football League (NFL) in 1979.
Simpson appeared in a number of films while he was in the NFL, including 1974’s The Towering Inferno, 1976’s Killer Force, 1977’s Roots, and more. Following his retirement from football, he went on to play Detective Nordberg in 1988’s The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, 1991’s The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, and 1994’s Naked Gun 331⁄3: The Final Insult.
In 1994, Simpson was arrested and charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ron Goldman. Simpson failed to turn himself in to the authorities after a warrant was issued for his arrest, leading to a low-speed chase that was broadcast live on television.
A lengthy and highly publicized trial that became a major talking point regarding the American judicial system followed. The trial ultimately saw Simpson controversially acquitted of the crimes; however, a civil trial suit from the victims’ families later found him liable for the crimes.
Simpson was later arrested in 2007 for armed robbery and kidnapping. He was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment but was granted parole in 2017.
ComingSoon sends condolences to Simpson’s family and friends at this time.
