According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has tapped Nicholas Braun (Succession), Tommy Dewey (Casual) and Nicholas Podany (Hello Tomorrow) to portray key figures in Jason Reitman’s upcoming SNL 1975 movie, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of Saturday Night Live’s first episode.
Braun is set to play late puppeteer Jim Henson, while Dewey will be portraying Scrooged scribe and actor Michael O’Donoghue. As for Podany, he has been cast to play Emmy-winning comedian Billy Crystal. At the moment, the film has yet to receive a release date from Sony Pictures.
“The film tells the true story of what happened that night behind the scenes in the moments leading up to the first SNL broadcast, retelling chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, ‘Live From New York, it’s Saturday Night,'” reads the synopsis.

SNL 1975 will be directed by Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s Jason Reitman from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan. The film also stars previously announced cast members Gabriel LaBelle as Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Kim Matula as Jane Curtin, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase and Matt Wood as John Belushi. It is being produced by Reitman, Kenan, Jason Blumenfeld, Erica Mills and Peter Rice.
The first episode of Saturday Night Live was broadcast on October 11, 1975, when a group of young comedians and writers including Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett, Morries, Larraine Newman, and Michael O’Donoghue changed television forever. Reitman and Kenan are conducting a series of interviews with all living cast, writers, and crew who were present during the first night.
