Sarah Polley is reportedly no longer directing Disney’s live-action Bambi remake.
According to a recent report from TheWrap, Polley will no longer be directing the live-action remake of Bambi. No further details were provided, and it’s currently unclear if the project will continue to move forward following Bailey’s departure.
What do we know about the Bambi remake?
In January 2020, Disney announced that a computer-animated remake of 1942’s Bambi is in the works. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer were hired to write the script for the movie, which was described as a “companion piece” to 2016’s The Jungle Book and 2019’s
The Lion King, while Paul Weitz, Chris Weitz, and Andrew Miano signed on to produce it.
In June 2023, Deadline reported that Polley, known for directing 2011’s Take This Waltz and 2022’s Women Talking, was in talks to direct the movie while Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster were brought on to re-work the script.
Disney also hired Kacey Musgraves to provide music for the movie.
There’s been little news regarding the Bambi remake since then; although, Beer told Collider in September 2023, “I do think there is a way to update Bambi, and our take on it was… did give a little bit more of a scope to it. And I just think that to be able to bring it to life for kids these days in a way that maybe they relate to a little bit more would be of service to the original.”
During an investor conference held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned that the studio had quietly “killed a few projects” that the studio didn’t “feel were strong enough.” Iger didn’t mention any specific names, meaning the live-action Bambi remake still could be happening, as Disney has not officially commented on the matter at this time.
