Daniel Day-Lewis to Stay Retired Despite Rumors of a Return to Acting

It’s been nearly seven years since Daniel Day-Lewis retired from acting, and the three-time Oscar winner has no intention to act again. While speaking with ScreenDaily, Jim Sheridan, who directed Day-Lewis in My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, and The Boxer, revealed his longtime collaborator will stay retired. However, Sheridan hopes Day-Lewis might change his mind one day.

“He says he’s done. I keep talking to him,” Sheridan said. “I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else. He opens up the streamers and there’s seven thousand choices, none of them are good. Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote, you can stop it. It’s not the same experience. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something because he’s so good.”

Earlier, Day-Lewis made a rare public appearance to present Martin Scorsese with an award for Best Director at the National Board of Review Awards. Scorsese, who directed Day-Lewis in The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York, expressed hope that the two could make one more film together.

“We did two films together,” Scorsese said. “It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more.”

Why Did Daniel Day-Lewis Retire?

In June 2017, Day-Lewis announced his retirement through a statement shared by his spokesperson.

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor,” the statement read. “He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

The move came six months before the release of his final film role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Day-Lewis received his sixth nomination for Best Actor at the 2018 Oscars, ultimately losing to Gary Oldman.

Widely considered one of the greatest performers ever, Day-Lewis is the only man to win three Best Acting Oscars. His wins came for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln.
