The not-so-fetch “fire crotch” reference has been removed from the digital version of the 2024 musical remake of Mean Girls. This comes after original Cady Heron star Lindsay Lohan was “hurt and disappointed” over a derogatory joke that has been associated with her since the early 2000s.
The term “fire crotch” was associated with the actress back in 2006 after a headline-making TMZ paparazzi video was released, which featured socialite Brandon Davis making insulting comments about Lohan’s body. The paparazzi video also featured Paris Hilton, who can be heard laughing in the background.
Lohan’s representative, Leslie Sloane, previously told The Messenger that Lohan — who made a cameo in the remake — was “very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film.”
The sequence in question was of rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who uses the term during the film’s prom scene when she tells Cady (now played by Angourie Rice), “We are going back red. Y2K fire crotch is back!”
According to Variety, the digital version of the 2024 musical reboot jumps directly to the rapper — who portrays herself — saying “We are going back red,” entirely removing the insulting term.
What is the 2024 musical remake of Mean Girls about?
The new Mean Girls, directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne, follows the story of the original, wherein the then-homeschooled Cady Heron tries to adjust to a new school setting. While struggling to remain true to herself, Cady — along with her new-found friends Janis (Auliʻi Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey) — devises a plan to take down North Shore High School’s queen bee, Regina George (Reneé Rapp).
The synopsis reads: “New student Cady Heron is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,’ ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian, she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.”
Mean Girls also stars Avantika Vandanapu and Bebe Wood as The Plastics’ Karen and Gretchen Wieners, respectively. The rest of the cast includes Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels, Jenna Fischer as Ms. Heron, Busy Philipps as Mrs. George, Tina Fey as Ms. Norbury, and Tim Meadows as Mr. Duval.
