This week, Disney announced that a second Moana film was not only in the works, but coming later this year. According to Deadline, this may have an effect on what happens to the live-action film based on the hit movie.
In a recent report, Deadline noted that the live-action version of Moana — which was announced last year and slated to release in 2025 — will most likely have its release date delayed.
Originally, Disney had set June 27, 2025 as the release date for the film, but Deadline notes that it will not be sticking to that due to a myriad of factors — including the fact that they haven’t even begun production on the project yet.
Who’s Involved in the live-action Moana movie?
Further details about the cast have not yet been revealed yet, but original Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho recently confirmed that she won’t be reprising her iconic character in the live-action adaptation. Instead, she will serve as an executive producer and is glad to “pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that helped inspire her story.”
The Moana live-action remake will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, who plans to return for the remake, as well as Dany and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner and Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. It will be executive produced by Auli‘i Cravalho — the voice of Moana in the 2016 film — and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for Moana, will also take part in the remake’s production alongside Samoan industry pro Dana Ledoux Miller.
The original was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
