According to Variety, Marvel vet Karen Gillan has signed on for the leading role in the upcoming historical comedy titled Fools.
Gillan is set to portray the role of Queen Mary Tudor I. The Guardians of the Galaxy star will be joined by Patsy Ferran (Mickey 17), Brenda Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice), and Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady), with Ferran and Broadbent cast to play the respective roles of Jane Foole and Cardinal Pole.
What is Fools about?
“Set in the 16th century in the aftermath of Henry VIII’s death, the film follows England’s first queen, Mary I, as she takes the throne in a divided country on the brink of chaos,” reads the synopsis. “While the ambitious Cardinal Pole plots to secure control, he overlooks a humble court jester, Jane Foole. The pious and apparently humorless queen finds Jane’s brilliant slapstick routines uproariously funny, and they strike up a genuine friendship, the comedy lightening Mary’s mood in the darkest of times and helping fend off Pole’s murderous manipulation. But can Jane’s comedy save a nation from civil war?”
Fools will be written and directed by Emmy winner Guy Jenkin. It is produced by Ryan Bennett for PaperEpic Productions. The film is scheduled to start its production sometime this year.
