Killers of the Flower Moon’s Lily Gladstone will star in an adaptation of The Memory Police, which is being written by Charlie Kaufman.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Gladstone has signed on to star in The Memory Police, which is based on the 1994 sci-fi novel of the same name by Yoko Ogawa.
Kaufman — known for writing 1999’s Being John Malkovich, 2002’s Adaptation., 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and more — is penning the screenplay, while Reed Morano is directing the movie. Monrao previously directed 2018’s I Think We’re Alone Now and 2020’s The Rhythm Section, along with episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale and Halt and Catch Fire.
The project also marks a reunion for Gladstone and Martin Scorsese, who directed Killers of the Flower Moon and is executive producing The Memory Police. Ogawa will also executive produce the movie, while Morano and Margot Hand will serve as producers.
What is The Memory Police about?
The synopsis of Ogawa’s novel reads, “On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses—until things become much more serious. Most of the island’s inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten.
When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards. As fear and loss close in around them, they cling to her writing as the last way of preserving the past. A surreal, provocative fable about the power of memory and the trauma of loss, The Memory Police is a stunning new work from one of the most exciting contemporary authors writing in any language.”
The Memory Police does not yet have a release date.
