Christopher Nolan‘s 2020 film Tenet is set to return to theaters in support of the highly anticipated sequel Dune: Part Two.
Over at The InSneider (subscription required but encouraged), Jeff Sneider has reported that Tenet will come back to theaters, including IMAX, for one week from February 23 to March 1 — the day that Dune: Part Two releases theatrically. Nolan and Dune director Denis Villeneuve are both big proponents of the movie theater experience and both had their Warner Bros. films’ theatrical plans altered, as Dune went to Max and theaters at the same time while Tenet was largely unable to screen in 70mm IMAX due to the pandemic.
Nolan apparently approached Warner Bros. with the idea, which the studio was quite open to — partially because of how Tenet’s original theatrical release at the height of the pandemic hampered its box office returns and its ability to be widely shown in 70mm IMAX. As such, Sneider explains that Warner Bros. is trying to fix its relationship with Nolan and that this is an opportunity for the studio to begin to do so. The official announcement will apparently drop tomorrow, while tickets will go on sale this Friday.
Tenet was originally released in theaters on September 3, 2020. The film was written and directed by Nolan and starred John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. It received mixed critical reception but was nominated for two Academy Awards and won the award for Best Visual Effects.
What is Tenet about?
“A secret agent is given a single word as his weapon and sent to prevent the onset of World War III,” reads the movie’s synopsis. “He must travel through time and bend the laws of nature in order to be successful in his mission.”
