Hilary Clinton has taken to social media to offer up support for both Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, following their lack of Oscar nominations for the hit film Barbie.
“Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you,” reads the statement, which Clinton shared on Twitter. “You’re both so much more than Kenough.”
Clinton joins internet criticism over high-profile snubs
Following Tuesday’s Oscar nomination reveal, many online took to criticizing the Academy’s voting block for not nominating Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig for Best Actress and Best Director, respectively. Ryan Gosling, who starred in the film as Ken and who did get a Best Supporting Actor nomination, even took to social media to give credit to the pair for their hand in making the film.
“But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” Gosling said in a statement on Tuesday. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
Despite not being nominated in the Best Actress and Best Director categories, Barbie was still the fourth-most nominated film at the awards, scoring eight nominations in total including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling as Ken), Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera as Gloria), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.
