After a bit of a lull, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has provided an update on the J.J. Abram-produced Superman movie.
On the social media platform Threads, Gunn was asked if Abrams‘ Superman movie — which would be considered an Elseworlds project — was still in development. The filmmaker and co-CEO responded with a straightforward “yes,” confirming that the project hasn’t been scrapped.

Given Abrams’ Superman movie was first revealed prior to the major changes that took place at DC, fans were unsure of if the film would still be able to happen — particularly as the new DC Universe is set to begin with 2025’s Superman: Legacy. Regardless, it sounds as though it’s still a possibility, with Ta-Nehisi Coates set to write film and Abrams producing.
What other Elseworlds projects are coming out?
Outside of the new DCU, one Elseworlds project is The Batman: Part II. Little is known about the plot of the superhero sequel at this time, though Robert Pattinson is set to return as the titular Dark Knight. The first film did tease the Joker and leave the Riddler alive at Arkham, so one or both of these iconic antagonists could make a return. Just last month, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn debunked a rumor about who the sequel’s villains could be, as well as the possible introduction of Dick Grayson/Robin.
There’s also Joker: Folie à Deux, which is once again being directed by Todd Phillips. The sequel will feature the return of Joaquin Phoenix as he reprises his Oscar-winning role as the titular DC villain alongside Grammy-winning superstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
