Gillian Anderson has joined the cast of Disney’s Tron 3.
Per Deadline, Anderson (The X-Files, Sex Education) has officially joined the cast of Tron 3, which is also known as Tron: Ares. She’ll star in the movie alongside Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Greta Lee.
On Instagram, director Joachim Rønning also shared a photo announcing that production on Tron 3 was officially underway. The photo, which can be viewed below reveals the official logo for the movie, while the caption reads, “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID.”
What else do we know about Tron 3?
According to a June 2023 article published by The Hollywood Reporter, Rønning’s Tron 3 will “focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.”
Leto is playing a character named Ares, who is a manifestation of the sentient program.
In addition to Leto, Turner-Smith, Lee, and Anderson, Tron: Ares stars Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. Written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, the movie is produced by Emma Ludbrook, Justin Springer, and Jeffrey Silver, while Russell Allen serves as an executive producer.
Tron: Ares was originally supposed to begin filming in August 2023; however, production was delayed because of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes.
The Tron franchise began in 1982. Directed by Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote the script alongside Bonnie MacBird, the film introduced fans to Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn for the first time, while Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner, Cindy Morgan, and Barnard Hughes also starred.
Bridges returned for the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski. The movie also featured performances from Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Sheen.
Tron: Ares does not yet have an official release date from Disney.
