Tom Cruise is still feeling the need for speed.
According to Puck, Paramount is moving forward with Top Gun 3. Writer Ehren Kruger has been tapped to write a script for a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, which will star Cruise, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller.
The news comes just a few days after Cruise announced he had signed a deal to develop, produce, and star in “original and franchise theatrical films” for Warner Bros. The deal, however, is non-exclusive, meaning that Cruise can simultaneously continue working for studios like Paramount, Universal, etc.
Puck’s article says that Top Gun 3 could be Cruise’s next film after Mission: Impossible 8, meaning anything he’s working on with Warner Bros. — including a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel — could get pushed to 2025.
Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison will both produce Top Gun 3, while Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski may return to direct, though this has not been confirmed at this time.
Tom Cruise takes a trip to the danger zone with Top Gun
Directed by Tony Scott, the original Top Gun was released in 1986 from Paramount Pictures. The film saw Cruise play Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a young naval aviator looking to prove he’s got what it takes to be part of the United States Navy’s Fighter Weapons School. The movie also starred Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Edwards.
The sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, came in 2022. Cruise and Kilmer both reprised their roles, while Powell, Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris also joined the cast. The movie was a box office juggernaut, bringing in $1.496 billion at the worldwide box office off a budget of approximately $170 million. Top Gun: Maverick was also nominated for six Oscars at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won the award for Best Sound.
Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are both streaming on Paramount+. Top Gun: Maverick is also streaming on Prime Video and MGM+.
