Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie will begin filming on January 21, 2024.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. has secured a January 21 production start date for Anderson’s latest, still-untitled film. Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall will all star in the movie, while the script was written by Anderson.
Plot details remain under wraps at this time, though Deadline’s article states, “We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one that PTA has attempted, with a commensurate budget.”

Anderson made his feature film directorial debut in 1996 with Hard Eight. He followed that up with 1997’s Boogie Nights, which earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay (Anderson), Best Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore), and Best Supporting Actor (Burt Reynolds).
He then went on to make 1999’s Magnolia, 2002’s Punch-Drunk Love, 2007’s There Will Be Blood, 2012’s The Master, 2014’s Inherent Vice, and 2017’s Phantom Thread, His most recent film, Licorice Pizza, was released in November 2021 and starred Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Penn, Tom Waits, and Bradley Cooper. Licorice Pizza was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the 94th Academy Awards.
DiCaprio, meanwhile, is coming off of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, while he also recently starred in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up. Penn is known for starring in movies such as 2003’s Mystic River and 2008’s Milk, while he’s also directed films such as 2007’s Into the Wild and the recent 2023 documentary Superpower.
Hall previously starred in movies such as 2017’s Girls Trip, 2018’s Support the Girls, 2022’s Master, and 2022’s Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.
