It seemed inevitable that once the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse hit the public domain, there would be a frantic scramble to be the first one to cash in with a Mickey Mouse horror movie.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising to see Mickey’s Mouse Trap announced on the first day of 2024.
Following the 1928 animated short Steamboat Willie’s move to the public domain, it made the original version of Mickey Mouse open season for creative projects outside Disney in much the same way it did for Winnie the Pooh last year when the infamous Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey made handsome money off a shoestring budget.

The synopsis for Mickey’s Mouse Trap reads, “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift, so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.”
The film stars Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek, and Simon Phillips. It is produced by Paul Whitney, Mark Popejoy, Alexander Gausman, and Andrew Agopsowicz, with Filmcore’s Mem Ferda co-producing.
Mickey’s Mouse Trap is aiming for a March 2024 release date.
