Godzilla: Minus One Storms Past Shin Godzilla’s Worldwide Box Office

Another success story to add to Godzilla: Minus One‘s growing list as it has passed the worldwide box office of previous series record setter Shin Godzilla.

Godzilla: Minus One is King of the Box Office Monsters

Godzilla: Minus One is now the most successful Toho Godzilla movie in a franchise that has spanned almost 70 years and nearly 40 movies.

Despite initially being positioned for a brief theatrical run in the West, the film’s surprise opening numbers and subsequent word of mouth tail have seen it extend its lifespan to the end of 2023, and eclipse Shin Godzilla’s global haul of $77.9 million by hitting the $78 million mark.

When it made its domestic debut, it earned the title of the most successful opening for a live-action Japanese film ever. It’s since gone on to become the sixth-highest-performing foreign live-action movie of all time in the US, surpassing the likes of Pan’s Labryinth in the process.

With a modest (if morally complicated) budget of around $15 million, Godzilla: Minus One’s critical and commercial success is undeniably more impressive than that of its Western counterparts.

In Godzilla: Minus One, post-war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster. A ragtag group of war survivors and citizens are all that stand between Japan’s salvation or annihilation.

Godzilla Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who previously worked on the visual effects for Shin Godzilla. It stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. It marks the first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla.
