Advertisements are coming to Prime Video.
Starting on January 29, 2024, Amazon Prime Video movies and television shows will begin including limited advertisements. “This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers,” the company said in an email.
For an additional $2.99 per month, Prime Video subscribers can opt into an ad-free tier option. “Live TV, Freevee, and channel subscriptions may continue to have ads,” Prime Video’s website reads. Click here for more information.
According to Deadline, there will be no ads shown on television shows or movies that are purchased or rented.
Prime Video announced ads were coming in September 2023
Amazon initially announced in September 2023 that they planned to begin showing advertisements on Prime Video. The company said in a press release at the time, “To continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time, starting in early 2024, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertisements. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. Ads in Prime Video content will be introduced in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Canada in early 2024, followed by France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia later in the year. No action is required for Prime members. We’re not making changes in 2024 to the current price of Prime membership.”
Prime Video is known for offering original series such as The Boys, Carnival Row, The Expanse, Fleabag, Gen V, Good Omens, Invincible, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Man In The High Castle, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Reacher, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Underground Railroad, The Wheel of Time, and more.
For now, customers can get Prime Video for $8.99 a month or through an Amazon Prime account that costs $14.99 a month (or $139 per year). The ad-free tier goes into effect on Jan. 29, 2024.
