Adam Driver wasn’t actually behind the wheel of a car when filming scenes for Michael Mann’s Ferrari.
Driver, who plays Enzo Ferrari in Mann’s new movie, appeared on the Late Night with Seth Meyers show to discuss the upcoming film, which releases in theaters on December 25, 2023.
When asked by Meyers if he did any actual driving when filming scenes for Ferrari, Driver responded with a firm “no.”
He explained, “He [Enzo Ferrari] wasn’t racing [at that time in his life], and the little thing we did race, it was a very historic vehicle, so they don’t want you driving that around. And, also, just insurance reasons. They don’t want you driving around these kinds of replica 801s that are very dangerous.”
He continued, “It becomes obvious right away how dangerous they are. There’s no roll cages, there’s no seat belts. The goal was to be thrown from the car as opposed to stuck in the car and burned to death.”
What is Ferrari about?
“It is the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle of Formula 1, ex-racer Enzo Ferrari is in crisis. Bankruptcy threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino a year earlier. Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his son Piero with Lina Lardi. Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia. “
Along with Driver, Ferrari stars Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey. The screenplay, which is based on the 1991 Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine biography by Brock Yates, is written by Troy Kennedy Martin.
Directed by Mann, Ferrari releases in the United States on December 25, 2023, from Neon.
