Get ready for a new trilogy of Planet of the Apes movies.
Per Empire Magazine, the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is intended to kickstart a new trilogy of movies from 20th Century Studios.
“From the beginning we thought about this as a trilogy,” director Wes Ball explained. “We had these grand ideas of where it could ultimately go and how it could fit into the legacy of these movies. So I’m certainly talking to [the studio] right now about the next story.”
Empire’s article also reveals that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be set approximately 300 years after the events of 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, which was the final film in a trilogy of Apes movies that also includes 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
A new photo from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has also been released per a tweet posted by Empire Magazine, which can be viewed below:
Ball is unsure if he’ll continue directing future installments in the franchise, as he recently signed on to direct a live-action Legend of Zelda movie; however, he did note that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be “about the beginning of something.”
“Those last three movies were about the end of something,” he explained. They were about the end of this Moses story. They were about the end of humanity. And we thought, ‘From the ashes of those previous movies, we’re gonna grow a new tree to climb.’ This movie is very much about the beginning of something.”
What is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes about?
“Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows,” the official synopsis reads. “As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”
Starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Travis Jeffrey, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases in United States theaters on May 24, 2024.
