The 2021 film Cruella has provided viewers with a back story about a villain’s earlier years. It chronicled her rise into the destructive and violent woman known as Cruella de Vil. Complete with the titular character’s iconic fashion moments and her newfound power, Cruella is definitely a film that demands a sequel.
Although there is sadly still no news about the second Cruella movie, writer Tony McNamara shared some parts he wants to explore for a possible sequel. While the first film introduced Cruella (also known as Estella Miller) as an aspiring fashion designer making a name for herself in the fashion industry, fans of 101 Dalmatians know she’ll end up becoming a ruthless villain either way.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, McNamara revealed they could explore what transpired after Cruella’s newfound wealth and power.
“It’s kind of interesting that she ends the first movie, and she’s got power, and she’s got agency. It’s sort of like, What does she do with that? And how in your life, if you suddenly get agency and power, do you exercise it? What are you looking for now?,” said McNamara.
He continued, “She had this sort of family-versus-past thing going on, [with] her made family. I guess [in] the second movie, I think that’s an aspect that could be explored. If there was a second.”
Estella’s death marks Cruella’s ascent into villainy
Though Estella (Emma Stone) is still alive and well, she has already buried her old self and even organized a funeral for it, burying even the littlest kindness left in her. Now becoming a full-fledged Cruella, an alter-ego she created, the potential sequel could explore how the death of Estella and her newfound power and influence can corrupt her even more.
The synopsis for Cruella reads: “Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”
Cruella also starred Emma Thompson as the Baroness, Joel Fry as Jasper, Paul Walter Hauser as Horace, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Anita Darling, Mark Strong as John, John McCrea as Artie, and Emily Beecham as Catherine.
