Joel McHale says the upcoming Community movie is hoping to start filming next summer.
Speaking with Collider, McHale was asked for an update regarding the long-awaited Community movie now that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes are over.
After joking that the movie was shot yesterday, McHale said, “Um, it’s gonna be amazing. Well, you know, we were shooting it last summer and then, so I, I think as long as we can start getting all these schedules together, that it will probably be next summer. I mean, that is what I am, that’s what I hope for. You know, it’s everything. Everyone’s in and we’ve signed the thing. I mean, everyone’s so, uh, so yeah, we just need to make the time.”
What do we know about the Community movie?
Series creator Dan Harmon confirmed in 2021 that he was working on writing a Community movie. Peacock officially announced that the film was happening in September 2022. In 2023, McHale told Jimmy Kimmel that the movie was looking to begin filming in June; however, production was delayed because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
All of the main Community cast will seemingly be returning for the movie, apart from Chevy Chase, so long as the scheduling works out.
Harmon told The Hollywood Reporter in October 2023 that it wouldn’t be “too much of a spoiler to say that the story would involve the gang getting back together.” He continued, “Because the thing that’s going to matter most to me as an audience member or to anybody who loved that show is seeing those people see each other. And they still love each other, and it’s not going to feel the same if you’re shooting them separately at different months in different locations.”
