Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are both starring in Sony Pictures Entertainment’s new Karate Kid movie.
Sony Pictures Entertainment posted a new video revealing that Macchio and Chan will both be starring in a new Karate Kid movie together. Additionally, the video sees Macchio and Chan announce that a global search to find a young actor to play the main protagonist of the upcoming film is now underway.

What do we know about the new Karate Kid movie?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the forthcoming, still untitled Karate Kid movie is being directed by The End of the F***ing World’s Jonathan Entwistle. Rob Lieber provides the script, while Karen Rosenfelt is producing the film.
Not much is known about the new Karate Kid’s plot; however, it will reportedly be set on the East Coast and focus on a teenager from China.
Macchio debuted as Daniel LaRusso in 1984’s The Karate Kid, which was directed by Robert Mark Kamen and also starred Pat Morita, William Zabka, and Elisabeth Shue. He returned for two sequels, 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II and 1989’s The Karate Kid Part III, along with Netflix’s sequel television series, Cobra Kai.
Chan, meanwhile, starred as Mr. Han in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, directed by Harald Zwart and featuring Jaden Smith as Dre Parker.
Sony Pictures Entertainment’s video confirms that Macchio will be playing Daniel LaRusso and Chan will be playing Mr. Han in the upcoming movie. It’s not immediately clear if the new movie will play off the events of Cobra Kai or if it will feature any of the characters introduced in the Netflix series. Having been renewed for one final season in January 2023, Cobra Kai Season 6 does not yet have a release date as production was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
