Adam Sandler has offered another update on his second film with the Safdie brothers. He revealed the film may have been delayed yet again.
In a recent interview with Collider, Sandler was asked about the upcoming project, and said that he wasn’t sure when it would come out. The actor went on to say that the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes were the cause, due to the film needing to be set around live baseball games.
“We’re not sure right now. We kind of missed the opportunity of baseball season because of the strike,” said Sandler. “A lot of it was gonna be shot during live baseball. So it’s gonna take a minute. We’re figuring it all out right now. I’m not sure when it’s gonna happen.”
The next MLB season isn’t slated to begin until late March 2024, so any potential production on the project might have to wait until then to officially begin.
What do we know about the upcoming Adam Sandler and Safdie Brothers film?
The untitled project will be directed by Josh Safdie from a screenplay he co-wrote with brother Benny Safdie. This marks Josh Safdie’s second solo directorial feature following his “temporary” split from Benny Safdie.
It’s currently unclear if their rumored split was also one of the reasons for the Netflix film’s recent delay. Before the Safdie brothers gained recognition for their works on Good Time and Uncut Gems, Josh Safdie first made his directorial debut in 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed movie.
Besides Sandler, the project will also reportedly feature an all-star ensemble cast including Ben Affleck, Megan Thee Stallion, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Steve Harvey.
“Set in the world of high-end sports card collecting in the 1990s, a retired Baseball pitcher (Affleck) attempts a comeback as a sports memorabilia agent (Sandler) attempts to capitalize on his success,” reads the synopsis. “Megan Thee Stallion is said to play Affleck’s girlfriend.”
