What do we know about Mufasa: The Lion King?
Announced in September 2020, Mufasa: The Lion King serves as a prequel to 2019’s The Lion King remake. Like The Lion King, the movie will be styled with photorealistic computer animation. Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani will reprise their respective roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki.
Moonlight and If Beale Street Can Talk’s Barry Jenkins is directing Mufasa: The Lion King, while Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Scar. The screenplay comes from Jeff Nathanson, and Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak serve as producers.
Plot details for Mufasa: The Lion King remain largely under wraps at this time. Speaking about the project at the D23 Expo in 2022, per GamesRadar, Jenkins said, “I really knew this character, I loved him but then, as I was reading this wonderful script, I starting really thinking about Mufasa and why he’s great, and how people become great. It’s crazy. I am not a king, I am not a king, but when I make my movies… I was onstage at the Oscars with Moonlight and five of my best friends from college was also there, and what you’ll learn in this story is that Mufasa is great because of the family and friends he has with him.”
Mufasa: The Lion King arrives on December 20, 2024.
