President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order on Monday that established new standards and security measures for AI amidst concerns, due in part to Biden watching the latest Mission: Impossible film.
According to a new report from the Associated Press (via Variety), Biden became concerned about the growing use of artificial intelligence after he saw fake images of himself. Those concerns continued to grow, said Variety, after Biden watched Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, a film that is all about a sentient AI that kicks off film by sinking a submarine.
“If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about,” said White Hosue chief of staff Bruce Reed, who watched the film with Biden.
What is the new AI executive order?
Biden’s new executive order will begin taking effect over the next 90 to 365 days and will aim to develop standards, tools, and tests to ensure safety in various AI systems. The executive order will also require developers to share safety test results and other information with the U.S. government.
According to the White House, the executive order “directs the most sweeping actions ever taken to protect Americans from the potential risks of AI systems.”
As for the next Mission: Impossible film, the next film, which currently has no name, will release in the summer of 2025, after being delayed a year last week.
