After the relative success of the long-awaited Hocus Pocus 2 last year on Disney Plus, a further sequel was a no-brainer, but it’s been some time since we’ve heard anything about it due to ongoing strikes. But the end of the writers’ strike at least has opened up the door for fresh information on the project.
It’s Been a Spell
Writer Jen D’Angelo spoke to Entertainment Weekly recently and gave a small update on how things are progressing on the second sequel, and it looks like it will focus on Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch character a bit more.
“We’re still in the story phase; we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world; we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore…We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”
D’Angelo goes on to suggest Waddingham’s character could well be the mother referred to by the Sanderson Sisters in the original, and the story could delve into the relationship between them.
But it’s still early days in the life of Hocus Pocus 3, and it’ll be a while until something concrete is conjured up. ”Hocus Pocus 3 is still very much in the early stages.” D’ Angelo adds, “We don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options, and I think everybody is so delighted by the reaction that Hocus Pocus 2 got, and we’re excited to continue those stories.”
Hocus Pocus 2 reunited the starts of 1993’s Kenny Ortega movie Hocus Pocus. Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy reprised their roles as the Sanderson Sisters who tormented a modern town after being banished for 300 years. Upon defeat in the original movie, they lay dormant and were resurrected 29 years after that, setting up the 2022 sequel.
Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 are available to stream on Disney Plus now.
