10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg is open to the idea of reuniting with Mary Elizabeth Winstead for a potential sequel.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Trachtenberg was asked if he’d ever discussed making a direct sequel to 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane with Winstead. While Trachtenberg said they’d only briefly talked about it in hypothetical scenarios, he also didn’t rule the possibility of it out happening someday.
“I would still totally be open to it,” he said. “I think Mary would…We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios. And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know.”
Another Cloverfield sequel is already happening
While audiences may or may not wind up seeing what happens to Mary Elizabeth Winstead after escaping the bunker John Goodman’s character trapped her in, a fourth Cloverfield movie is currently in the works. The third Cloverfield movie, The Cloverfield Paradox, released directly onto Netflix in 2018.
J.J. Abrams previously stated the new Cloverfield film would directly follow the 2008 found-footage movie directed by Matt Reeves. Babak Anvari was announced as the director in September 2022, while Joe Barton is writing the script.
“I can’t ever say … what we’re doing because it’s Cloverfield and Cloverfield rules are that you don’t talk about Cloverfield,” Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter about the new film in January 2023. “The thing about Cloverfield from the beginning was it was always so surprising the way it came together, and I hope that it continues to be surprising.”
Trachtenberg, who recently made 2022’s Prey, also told CinemaBlend the upcoming “sequel they’re making is very cool.”
10 Cloverfield Lane is currently streaming on Paramount+.
