Fresh off the massive success of Barbie, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will team up again to star in the Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Details remain scarce besides Jay Roach directing the project and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment producing. However, Josey McNamara, one of LuckyChap’s cofounders, teased the prequel would honor the franchise.
“I can’t really say much, but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise,” McNamara told GamesRadar+ at the BFI London Film Festival. “I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.”
Robbie and Gosling were praised for their chemistry as Barbie and Ken, one of the many reasons the film grossed over $1.4 billion. McNamara hopes the Robbie-Gosling collaboration continues for years to come.
“They’re wonderful together,” McNamara added. “The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.”
What to Expect in Ocean’s Eleven Prequel?
The prequel will be part heist, part love story set in 1960s Europe at the Monaco Grand Prix. Roach described it as an “old-fashioned epic love story slash adventure disguised as a heist” in an interview with AP News.
“It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story,” Roach said. “And we were both inspired by Hitchcock, To Catch a Thief but also Notorious. It just wants to be a big, big, you know, cinematic spectacle. We didn’t quite sync up yet on what the right budget for it is.”
Roach is set to direct the prequel from a script penned by Carrie Solomon. Robbie, Roach, Tom Ackerly, and Michelle Graham will produce. McNamara, Gary Ross, and Olivia Milch will executive produce.
The series dates back to 1960 with the release of Ocean’s 11 with the Rat Pack. 40 years later, Steven Soderbergh released his remake, Ocean’s Eleven, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. Soderbergh went on to make two sequels. A spin-off, Ocean’s 8, was released in 2018 and featured an all-female cast led by Sandra Bullock.
