Robert Rodriguez is cautious about returning to the world of Desperado.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Rodriguez was asked if there were any of his other previous films he’d like to revisit after Spy Kids: Armageddon, the fifth movie in the Spy Kids franchise, recently debuted on Netflix.
“I would love to revisit the Desperado series,” he answered. “I thought it was way ahead of its time. It’s really hard to do today, for me, anything with guns. Gun violence has gotten out of control. Even those [that] are very tongue-in-cheek and kind of fun. It’s just hard to do. There’s always some terrible shooting and you just go, I don’t know if I can responsibly do anything with guns.
“I really love those films, they are so fun. They’re like Spy Kids for grownups, with guitar cases that fired missiles and gadgets galore. It was still made by [a] kid. Still, the glorification of it would be hard for me to pull off responsibly.”
What is Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado trilogy?
Rodriguez’s Desperado Trilogy, also known as the Mexico Trilogy, launched in 1993 with El Mariachi. The first film saw Carlos Gallardo play the titular character, a musician concealing a number of different weapons in his guitar case who is seeking revenge for the death of the woman he loved. El Mariachi marked Rodriguez’s feature film directorial debut.
Antonio Banderas took over the role of El Mariachi in the 1995 sequel, Desperado, which also starred Salma Hayek in her breakout role. Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin, Quentin Tarantino, Carlos Gomez, and Danny Trejo additionally starred in Desperado.
Banderas returned to star as El Mariachi in the third film in the trilogy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, which was released in 2003. Trejo and Marin also played roles in the film, while Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, and Eva Mendes joined the cast.
