Martin Scorsese wants to play a role in the new movie he’s making about Jesus Christ.
In an interview with Time Magazine, Scorsese offered some new details about the new Jesus movie he wants to make. Hinting that it would build on similar themes covered in 2016’s Silence starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver, Scorsese said he plans to be in the movie but didn’t elaborate any further than that.
“I don’t know what it’s going to be, exactly. I don’t know what you’d call it. It wouldn’t be a straight narrative.” he said. “But there would be staged scenes. And I’d be in it.”
While Scorsese is best known for directing movies like Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman, and many more, he’s also acted in a number of titles throughout the course of his career. He’s made cameo appearances in many of his own movies, while he also played meatier roles in 1990’s Dreams and 1994’s Quiz Show, among others.
What is Scorsese’s new Jesus movie?
In May 2023, Scorsese announced he’s working on a new movie about Jesus after he and his wife Helen Morris privately met with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” Scorsese said at the time, per Variety. “And I’m about to start making it.”
Further details about the project have not yet been revealed. Scorsese previously made a movie about Jesus, The Last Temptation of Christ, with Willem Dafoe in 1988. The director played the role of the prophet Isaiah in The Last Temptation of Christ.
Scorsese’s latest, Killers of the Flower Moon, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraiser, and Jesse Plemons. The film opens in the United States on October 20, 2023, before debuting on Apple TV+ at a later date.
