The late Paul Reubens will make his final movie performance in Hulu’s Quiz Lady.
Reubens, known for playing Pee-Wee Herman throughout his long and successful career, passed away at age 70 in July 2023 after he privately battled cancer for the past six years.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Reubens’ final film appearance will be Hulu’s Quiz Lady, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023. Reubens cameos as himself, rather than Pee-Wee Herman, in Quiz Lady, though it’s not immediately clear how large of a role he has.
Quiz Lady marks Reubens’ first credited feature film appearance since 2016’s Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. He’s appeared in a number of television series and animated projects since then, including episodes of Bob’s Burgers, What We Do in the Shadows, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, American Dad!, and more.
What is Quiz Lady about?
Quiz Lady, directed by Jessica Yu, also stars Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City), Holland Taylor (Legally Blonde), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Jon “Dumbfoundead” Park, and Will Ferrell (Barbie).
“In the original film, a brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, Anne, and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny, must work together to help cover their mother’s gambling debts,” the official synopsis reads. “When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion.”
Quiz Lady was written by Jen D’Angelo, who also produced the film alongside Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Maggie Haskins, Itay Reiss, Awkwafina, and Oh. Alex Brown and Erika Hampson both serve as executive producers.
Quiz Lady releases on Hulu on November 3, 2023.
