What is Next Goal Wins about?
“Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), Next Goal Wins follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001,” the official synopsis reads. “With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.”
Next Goal Wins also stars Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, Waititi, Will Arnett, and Rhys Darby.
The script, which is based on a 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, was co-written by Waititi and Iain Morris. Jonathan Cavendish, Garrett Basch, Waititi, Brett, and Jamison all serve as producers, while Andy Serkis, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, Kathryn Dean, and Josh McLaglen act as executive producers.
The film marks Waititi’s latest feature since 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. He’s also directed 2007’s Eagle vs Shark, 2010’s Boy, 2016’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and more. Waititi is currently working on an untitled Star Wars film that’s expected to go into production in 2024.
Next Goal Wins will premiere at the 2023 Toronto Intentional Film Festival before hitting theaters on November 17, 2023.
