Fast X director Louis Leterrier is teasing some big changes for Jason Momoa’s character in the next Fast and Furious movie.
Speaking with Empire Magazine, per MovieWeb, Leterrier teased some new developments for Dante Reyes, the lively antagonist played by Momoa.
“Let’s do something else,” Leterrier said. “It’s never twice the same with Jason. Dante will truly evolve. Let’s explore something we haven’t seen before. He was fueled by vengeance. He could have played it dark, angry. But it was interesting to play with the duality and the push-pull within the character, where within the same sentence he’s laughing and feels the pain of losing everything. Only an actor like Jason could have done that.”
Critics largely praised Momoa’s performance in Fast X, which released theatrically in the United States in May 2023. The film also starred Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Charlize Theron, Sung Kang, Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Brie Larson, and Helen Mirren. It made approximately $719 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $340 million.
More Fast and Furious films are currently in the works
In a June 2023 Instagram post, Diesel announced the eleventh Fast and Furious movie is eyeing an April 4, 2025, release date. He teased, “[Momoa] wanted to try something totally unique and special and ended up creating a scene-stealing character that the world won’t forget. Thank you all for showing up like you always do…. 7 billion means nothing if it doesn’t represent the true feeling of family and loyalty. For those who didn’t know the FastX was just part one, know that part two is going to be an effort from our fast family and studio like you have never seen.”
Following the success of 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, another Fast and Furious spin-off is also currently in development. So far, only Dwayne Johnson is signed on to star in the new spin-off. However, the rumored title of the new movie is Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, implying Momoa will also play a role in the film.
