Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is finally getting a proper physical media release.
Per ComicBook, Shout! Studios is releasing Weird: The Al Yankovic Story onto 4K Ultra, Blu-ray, and DVD in December 2023. All versions of the movie will come with bonus features that will be announced at a later date.
Daniel Radcliffe gets weird in Roku’s Al Yankovic biopic
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story released exclusively on The Roku Channel on November 4, 2022. A biopic satire that’s very loosely based on the life of parody songwriter Weird Al Yankovic, the film stars Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe in the titular role.
“The unexaggerated true story about the greatest musician of our time,” the synopsis reads. “From a conventional upbringing where playing the accordion was a sin, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic rebels and makes his dream of changing the words to world-renowned songs come true. An instant success and sex symbol, Al lives an excessive lifestyle and pursues an infamous romance that nearly destroys him.”
Additionally, the film stars Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna, Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, Toby Huss as Yankovic’s father, Julianne Nicholson as his mother, and more.
In 2010, director Eric Appel made a fake trailer (which starred Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, Olivia Wilde, Patton Oswalt, Gary Cole, and Mary Steenburgen) for a satirical film about Al Yankovic’s life for Funny or Die. Yankovic began showing the trailer at his concerts, which then led to the two of them collaborating together on Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
The film received two Emmy nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, including an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nomination for Radcliffe and an Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nomination for Yankovic and Appel.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story releases onto 4K Ultra, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 12, 2023.
