Haunted Mansion Director Talks Crossover Possibilities: ‘There’s A Lot of Cross-Pollination’

Director Justin Simien isn’t ruling out the chance of a Haunted Mansion crossover. Speaking with GamesRadar+, Simien said that, while the matter is “above [his] paygrade,” he believes there are plenty of opportunities for Haunted Mansion to crossover with other Disney properties.

“I certainly think it’s there, it’s certainly something I’ve noticed as a fan of these movies, and also of the parks, is that a lot of these worlds can fit side by side, like the crocodiles in Haunted Mansion and Peter Pan and Pirates [of the Caribbean] are kind of similar,” he said. “You’ve got the mermaids on the Peter Pan [ride too]. There’s a lot of cross-pollination that is certainly possible should the movie gods decide so.”

Haunted Mansion was released theatrically on July 28, 2023, to mixed reviews from critics. So far, the film has grossed approximately $60.3 million at the worldwide box office with a budget of $150 million. It is the second movie to be based on the popular theme park ride following 2003’s Haunted Mansion, which starred Eddie Murphy, Marsha Thomason, and Terence Stamp.

Simien’s appreciation for Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride helped him make the film

“It made me feel really comfortable leaning on the source material because I had an appreciation for it,” Simien said of his adaptation. “I had an appreciation for the philosophy that went behind these rides and the way that Walt Disney really leaned on classic, old school production design and sound design, and guiding your eye with lighting effects.”

Haunted Mansion stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chase W. Dillon, and Jared Leto. The screenplay comes from Katie Dippold, with Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich serving as producers and Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman as executive producers.

Haunted Mansion is currently playing in theaters in the United States.
