In a recent interview with IGN, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal opened up about the sequel to his 2019 film adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s horror children’s book series.
Øvredal confirmed that the project is still in development, and revealed they already have a story in mind for the sequel. However, the writing process was recently halted due to the ongoing WGA strike.
“We have a story. We have a script,” He said. “We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike — but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress.”
Who’s Involved in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 will once again be directed by Øvredal from a screenplay written by returning scribes Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman, based on producer Guillermo del Toro’s story. Further details about the sequel’s story and characters are still under wraps. Producers are Jason Brown and Sean Daniel with eOne co-financing.
The first installment was set in 1968 in the small town of Mill Valley, where a group of teenagers discover the book of town legend Sarah Bellows. This mysterious tome is filled with bloodcurdling tales that come to life and terrorize the teens. It featured a young cast consisting of Zoe Colletti, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Michael Garza, and more.
The film earned a total gross of over $100 million during its theatrical run against a reported budget of around $20-28 million. It originally hailed from the now-defunct CBS Films.
