Netflix released the first teaser for Spy Kids: Armageddon, a new Netflix film directed by Rodriguez that reboots the popular franchise. “When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world,” Netflix’s description of the film reads.

Spy Kids: Armageddon introduces a new generation of heroes

The Spy Kids franchise began in 2001. The first film in the series sees siblings Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) embark on a mission to save their parents, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino, from the host of a twisted children’s television show, Floop (Alan Cumming), and his island of peculiar inventions.

A sequel, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, arrived in 2002, followed by Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003 and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 2011. All four films were directed and written by Rodriguez. An animated Spy Kids: Mission Critical Netflix series was also released in 2018 and ran for two seasons.

“We have a really fun new cast, Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi are so wonderful together, and our new Spy Kids Connor and Everly are simply magical,” Rodriguez told People Magazine about the new film. “They are super talented, and very fun to watch.”

He added, “I’ve just heard from so many families how much they’ve enjoyed these films over the course of their lives. And now a lot of kids who enjoyed the first films as children are parents themselves and enjoy sharing them with their kids.”

Spy Kids: Armageddon releases on Netflix on Sept. 22, 2023.
